Sourdough Starter
Ingredients
- 1 C whole wheat flour
- 1 tsp dry yeast
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1 ½ C warm water
Steps
- Mix all ingredients in glass container. Let rise overnight at room temp.
- In morning, add 1 cup flour + enough water to make a thick batter.
- Repeat second step for 2 or 3 days.
- Allow the starter to sit for 1 to 3 days until it becomes active & bubbly.
- It is now ready to use or to cover & store in the refrigerator.
- To replenish: Each time you use your starter, replenish it with a mixture of equal parts of milk + flour (i.e. ½ cup of flour & ½ cup of milk). Leave it at room temp several hours, or overnight, until it again becomes full of bubbles, then cover & store in the refrigerator.
- The starter is best if used at least once a week.
